Barnard Castle

The reason for Barnard Castle’s existence is the Castle itself. Re-built by Bernard Balliol after the Norman Conquests, the now battle worn castle sits on the bank of the River Tees. A fascinating tour, especially with the optional audio device, courtesy of English Heritage is a must see site.
Flatts woods, Barnard Castle

A beautiful woodland walk located in Barnard Castle close to the castle entrance. The woods are well supplied with paths and seats, providing opportunities for brisk walks or quiet strolls at every season of the year in natural surroundings adjoining the town. The wood consists of a wide variety of trees, both evergreen and deciduous, and affords a constantly changing pattern of colour according to the time of year.
Thorpe Farm, Scotch Corner

High Force, Middleton in Teesdale

High Force is one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. Dropping 21 meters into a plunge pool, the waterfall can be heard long before it can be seen along the woodland walk. The walk takes you to both the base of the fall and right to the top where you can appreciate its full force and the views alike.
Raby Castle, Staindrop

One of the most impressive castles in the North of England. Situated in 5 acres of walled gardens, the castle boasts fine furniture, impressive architecture and artwork. There is a well-stocked deer park and children’s woodland adventure playground to explore as well as the fine castle.
Darlington

Darlington offers up-market unique shopping with lots of independent stores you won't find anywhere else, as well as the traditional markets in the newly pedestrianised town centre. There is plenty of public art and numerous sculptures to visit, along with lots of heritage to explore within the town. The website is very good, showing 20 walks to undertake, in and around the town, for all levels of walkers.
